Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Milton is seeking an Endoscopy Technician who will be responsible for care and handling of flexible endoscopes. The Technician will exhibit an understanding of endoscopy fundamentals and endoscope construction, as well as infection control standards necessary to safely and effectively perform this job. The Endoscopy Technician will also provide technical support to nursing and physician staff of the GI Endoscopy unit.

This is a per diem position, with various shifts available.

POSITION FUNCTION:

The Endoscope Reprocessing Technician will be responsible for care and reprocessing of Flexible Endoscopes. The Technician will exhibit an understanding of endoscopy fundamentals and endoscope construction, as well as infection control standards necessary to safely and effectively perform this function. The Endoscope Reprocessing Technician will also provide technical support to nursing staff of the GI Endoscopy Unit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the general supervision of the Clinical Manager, or designee, the Endoscope Reprocessing Technician performs a variety of duties related to the care and reprocessing of GI Flexible Endoscopes, and provides technical support to the nursing staff of the GI Endoscopy Unit.

These would include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Performs all components of high-level disinfection and reprocessing of GI endoscopes.

  • Performs care and maintenance of all GI endoscopes.

  • Documents repairs to be made on equipment and initiates requisitions.

  • Keeps service and repair logs of all GI endoscopes and ancillary GI equipment

  • Performs care and maintenance of Automated Endoscope Reprocessors, including changing of high-level disinfectant; testing and documentation of disinfectant efficacy; changing of disinfectant, air, and water filters; and troubleshooting AER problems.

  • Performs set-up of cases in GI procedure rooms

  • Performs breakdown of cases in GI procedure rooms

  • Provides intra-procedure assistance to nurses and physicians performing GI endoscopy procedures

  • Assists with transport of patients between pre/post procedure area and procedure rooms

  • Performs stocking of GI procedure rooms

  • Inventory, order, and stock supplies used in the endoscope reprocessing room

  • Inventory, order, and stock supplies used in GI procedure rooms

  • Utilizes Meditech to enter procedure charges; perform unit based QI; order special purchase inventory items.

  • Collaborates, cooperates and communicates with other health care providers to ensure quality and continuity of care.

  • Performs all duties in accordance with safety and other laws, rules and regulations as set forth by appropriate regulatory and governmental agencies and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policy and procedure.

  • Adheres to standards of Universal Precautions.

  • Adheres to standards of Infection Control.

  • Actively participates in unit-based Q.I. studies and unit meetings.

  • Attends and/or participates in in-house or outside training programs to improve and augment skills and knowledge.

  • Works effectively with physicians and other staff of the GI Endoscopy Unit.

  • On call duties included in this role as needed.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED COMPONENTS:

Employee will attend Reprocessing Specialist Training (Certificate Course)

May be required to perform similar or related duties as may be necessary on an emergency basis or as designated by the department director or clinical manager.

The nature of the tasks/responsibilities required of employees in this position will likely expose them to blood and body fluids. Employees will be oriented to and required to understand and follow the standard precautions for infection control. A summary list of tasks and procedures that may cause exposure to blood and body fluids is listed in the attached Physical Abilities Job Description. Also identified is the protective gear that is available.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Hospital/Medical experience, especially in processing instruments, Meditech, and supply ordering and distribution.
